It all started with a lump in his neck in the Spring of 2014. Fast forward to today, and he’s gone through multiple surgeries, radioactive treatments, radiation, chemotherapy and countless other drugs that have altered his lifestyle forever. What started as a very treatable and less threatening form of cancer, has grown into a rare form of aggressive differentiated thyroid cancer, metastasizing (spreading) to multiple areas in his body including his bones, liver, and brain.

If you’ve read my last blog post (posted 2 years ago—yikes!), you may be familiar with what I’ve been going through in my personal life. Back when I posted it, my dad’s cancer journey was just beginning. Over the past 2 years, he’s had a mixture of good news and bad news from scan results. But along with all of that, comes some pretty intense bills. Follow-up scans and monthly treatments are costing him thousands of dollars in copay. It’s a tiresome burden that many families battling cancer deal with on a daily basis. And it sparked inspiration.

Last year, I decided to put my skills into good use and do a fundraiser for my dad. In May 2015, the highly anticipated Pacquiao vs. Mayweather fight was all the rage. I created a Manny Pacquiao art piece years ago and after having many people ask me to turn it into a shirt, I finally did. With the hype of this boxing match and the support of family and friends, I was able to sell more than enough shirts to pay off hospital bills.

During that fundraiser, I also had people ask me if there was another way they could donate, and thus I created a GoFundMe account. I promoted it for a few months, but after I saw how much GoFundMe takes from the donations you receive, it didn’t really sit right with me. Don’t get me wrong, I think GoFundMe is a great way to gain financial help, but I didn’t like the idea that someone’s donation to help my dad was actually going somewhere else. So after brainstorming for a long period of time, I remembered something.

About 7 years ago, the original REVO put together special fundraisers for individuals. In 2009, a benefit concert, “REVO for Rocky” was held for musician Rocky Green. A year later, an auction called “REVO Weddings” was created for florist, Peggi Walker. Since then, both have passed on but REVO’s efforts to raise funds helped to lessen their financial burdens. At REVO Oahu, we’ve held benefit events and collaborated with local artists to create various projects. These projects helped raise funds and awareness for non-profits and humanitarian businesses. And now, we are starting our first fundraiser for a deserving individual, starting with my dad.

Starting today, Father’s Day, until the end of September (Thyroid Cancer Awareness month), all profits from sales will go towards helping him pay off his growing amount of medical bills. This new fundraiser will open the door for REVO Oahu to help many more deserving individuals in the future. We hope that you continue to support our missions and to stay on this crazy journey with us.

Happy Father's Day to my amazing hero and to all the other dad's out there!!
